Why Luganda
I served as a missionary in Uganda, among the Buganda, and the need for this work was plain long before it began. The Luganda Bible in common use was not translated from the text that stands behind the King James Bible. It was made from the Revised Standard Version, and it is riddled with the problems that came with it.
Those problems are not small, and they are not occasional. One of the Ugandan pastors now reviewing this work set the new translation beside the Bible he had used for years, and could not stop wondering how much was missing from it. His own remark was that his brethren would be surprised how much they never knew was part of God's word.
The aim is therefore a plain one: an accurate copy of the word of God in Luganda, for God's people of the Buganda kingdom.
Luganda does not stop at the borders of Buganda. It carries weight across Uganda and is understood well beyond the people who own it as their mother tongue. A complete and accurate Luganda Bible opens the scriptures not to one people only, but to many throughout the region.
How a book is made
This is a translation of the King James Bible into Luganda for the Buganda people. No book is the work of one man, and no book is counted finished until six men have handled it and agreed.
The books are taken in order, beginning at Genesis and working forward. That is deliberate. Terminology is built up as the work proceeds, so that a word settled in the law still reads the same way when it appears again in the prophets and in the Gospels.
Initial Translation
Bro. Gross and Bro. Walugembe
Two translators work through the book independently, each rendering the King James text into Luganda on his own. Neither man sees the other's work. Two complete translations of the same book come out of it.
Level 1 Review
The same two translators, together
The two men meet and compare their translations line by line. Where they differ, they talk it through until they agree. What comes out is one unified copy of the book.
Level 2 Review
Pastor Paul and Pastor Ssebanja
The unified copy goes to two Ugandan pastors. Pastor Paul is a native Luganda speaker who knows the King James Bible well. Pastor Ssebanja speaks Luganda only and has no acquaintance with the English Bible, and that is the point of asking him: he reads the new translation as any Luganda reader would, with nothing else to lean on, and his questions show whether it can be understood. Their notes go back to the translators, who meet again, weigh what was sent, and produce a Level 2 copy.
Level 3 Review
Missionary Keith Stensaas and Missionary Marlin Petersen
Two American missionaries, each with more than thirty years in Uganda, go through the Level 2 copy in depth. Their notes return to the translators the same way, and a Level 3 copy is made.
Final Review
The four Ugandans together, with Missionary Keith Stensaas holding the deciding vote
Until now the translators have carried most of the decisions themselves. In the final review that liberty ends. The two translators and the two pastors sit down with the Level 3 copy and read it through, and every choice must be explained and defended to the other three. Where they cannot agree, the matter is put to a vote; and because there are four voices, a tie is settled by Missionary Keith Stensaas. What comes out of that room is the finished book.
Read the five stages again and count what they come to. Not one of these numbers is an estimate. Every one of them is what happens to every book.
- 4formal reviewsLevel 1, Level 2, Level 3, and the Final Review stand between the first draft and the finished book.
- 8separate passesThe unified copy is made, read by both pastors, reworked, read by both missionaries, reworked, then read aloud by the four together.
- 16readings by a manTwo at the initial translation, two at Level 1, four across Level 2, four across Level 3, and four in the final room. A seventeenth reading is added whenever a vote ties and Missionary Stensaas is called back to settle it.
The initial translation is done twice over before a single reviewer sees it. Nothing goes forward on one man's judgment, and in the final room no choice stands unless its author can defend it to the other three.
How far it has come
27 July 2022
The work begins
Translation of the King James Bible into Luganda starts in Genesis, a few chapters at a time.
2025
The final review begins
Genesis is the first book read aloud and compared to the English word for word. Exodus follows in August.
17 November 2025
The books of Moses take shape
Genesis, Exodus and Leviticus stand complete through the final review.
2 February 2026
Isaiah cleared
The longest of the prophets passes Level 1, opening the way to finish the Old Testament.
5 June 2026
The Old Testament through Level 1
Malachi completes the sweep from Genesis to Malachi, four months ahead of the team's own projection.
31 July 2026
Into the Gospels
Mark passes Level 1; Luke is taken up next.
3 August 2026
The final review resumes
The pastors return to the reading of complete books.
2 October 2026
The Gospels through Level 1
John completes the four, and the Level 1 review moves on into Acts.
Field updates
2 October 2026
John has passed the Level 1 review. All four Gospels now stand at Level 1, and Acts is taken up next.
11 September 2026
Luke has passed the Level 1 review. Matthew, Mark and Luke now stand at Level 1, and John is taken up next.
10 August 2026
Job has passed the Level 2 review. Every book from Genesis to Job now stands at Level 2 or beyond, and Psalms is next before the pastors.
3 August 2026
The final review has resumed. This is the slowest part of the work and the most demanding: the book is read aloud one last time and compared to the English word for word.
5 June 2026
With Malachi finished, every book from Genesis to Malachi has now passed Level 1. In February the team expected to reach this point in the last quarter of the year; they reached it in June.
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God”
(Romans 10:17).
