The Light and the Darkness Cannot Dwell Together
Christians do not celebrate Halloween because it represents fellowship with practices scripture explicitly prohibits, and because our identity as God’s holy people calls us to be separate from the world’s darkness. This is not simple tradition or preference—it is a matter of biblical obedience and spiritual wisdom.
The apostle Paul asked the Corinthians a penetrating question: “And what communion hath light with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14). The answer, of course, is none whatsoever. As believers, we have been “called out of darkness into his marvellous light” (1 Peter 2:9), and we cannot simultaneously fellowship with both light and darkness without compromising our testimony and grieving the Spirit of God.
The Ancient Roots of Modern Revelry
The Celtic Foundation
To understand why we abstain from Halloween, we must first understand what it is. Halloween finds its origins in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced “sow-in”), celebrated from October 31st through November 1st. This was no innocent harvest celebration, but a festival centered upon death, the supernatural, and communication with departed spirits.
The Celts believed that on this night, the boundary between the world of the living and the world of the dead grew thin, allowing spirits to cross over and interact with the living. To ward off malevolent spirits, they lit great bonfires and carved frightening faces into turnips (the predecessors to our modern jack-o’-lanterns). People would dress in costumes—a practice called “guising“—both to disguise themselves from harmful spirits and to impersonate supernatural beings.
The Medieval Transformation
As Christianity spread through Celtic lands, the Catholic Church sought to transform rather than eliminate pagan festivals. All Saints’ Day, originally celebrated on May 13th, was moved to November 1st during the 8th century. Some historians suggest this was a deliberate attempt to Christianize the pagan Samhain celebration, though the exact motivation remains debated, if we are to be intellectually honest.
The evening before All Saints’ Day became known as “All Hallows’ Eve,” from which we derive the word “Halloween” literally meaning “holy evening“. The medieval practice of “souling” emerged, where the poor would go door to door offering prayers for the dead in exchange for “soul cakes“. This tradition, combined with the older Celtic customs of guising, evolved into our modern trick-or-treating.
The Modern Reality
What we observe today bears the unmistakable marks of its ancient origins. The fascination with death, ghosts, witches, and the occult that characterizes modern Halloween celebrations is not harmless fun, it is, whether intentionally or not, the continuation of practices that scripture explicitly condemns. Even secular authorities acknowledge this connection: Anton LaVey, founder of the Church of Satan, declared Halloween one of the two most important satanic holidays, stating it is “the one night out of the year when the occultist can blend in with everyone else“.
The Clear Counsel of Scripture
God’s Hatred of Occult Practices
The Bible speaks with unmistakable clarity regarding practices associated with Halloween. Moses warned the children of Israel: “There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer” (Deuteronomy 18:10-11).
These are not simply Old Testament restrictions that have been superseded. The New Testament confirms that “sorcerers” will have their part “in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone” (Revelation 21:8). When Paul encountered those who practiced “curious arts” in Ephesus, they brought their books and “burned them before all men” (Acts 19:19), demonstrating complete separation from occult practices.
The Command for Separation
God’s people are called to be holy—set apart for His purposes. “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light” (1 Peter 2:9).
This separation is not only external but springs from an internal transformation. “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” (Romans 12:2).
The principle extends beyond personal practice to association with darkness itself. “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14). We are commanded to “have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them” (Ephesians 5:11).
The Danger of Familiar Spirits
Particularly relevant to Halloween’s emphasis on communicating with the dead is scripture’s prohibition against “familiar spirits.” These are devils that impersonate deceased persons to deceive the living. The Lord declared through Moses: “Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God” (Leviticus 19:31).
The Bible makes clear that “the dead know not any thing” (Ecclesiastes 9:5) and that death is a one-way journey: “As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away: so he that goeth down to the grave shall come up no more. He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more” (Job 7:9-10). Any supposed communication with the dead is actually trafficking with devils.
Practical Wisdom for Christian Families
Teaching Our Children
Christian parents face the challenge of explaining to children why we do not participate in what appears to be harmless fun. This provides a wonderful opportunity to teach biblical principles in practical terms. Rather than focusing solely on what we avoid, we can emphasize what we embrace.
We can explain that just as a police officer doesn’t dress like a criminal even in play, Christians don’t dress like or pretend to be things that God calls evil. We have been given a new identity in Christ—why would we want to masquerade as something dark when we are children of light?
Alternative Celebrations
Many churches organize “harvest festivals” or “fall celebrations” on October 31st, providing wholesome alternatives for Christian families. While these events serve a good purpose in offering fellowship and fun, we must be careful not to inadvertently create a baptized Halloween that retains the same emphasis on devilish costumes, candy, and door-to-door solicitation. The goal is not to replicate Halloween in a church setting, but to provide something genuinely different.
Gracious Response to Others
Our abstinence from Halloween should never become a source of pride toward others. Many sincere Christians see no harm in allowing their children to dress up and collect candy, viewing it as nothing more than innocent fun. While we may disagree with their assessment, we must respond with grace and humility. Confidence in truth and paranoia about dissent are not the same thing, though they are often confused in fundamentalist circles that mistake every disagreement for a declaration of war.
We can use these opportunities to gently explain our convictions without condemning those who see things differently. Our goal is not to win arguments but to win hearts to truth. As Peter counseled: “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15). Our answer should serve as a guide for those seeking understanding, not a cudgel with which to beat fellow believers into submission.
The Better Way
What We Gain in Christ
The Christian life is not primarily about restriction but about relationship. We do not avoid Halloween because we are killjoys who want to deprive children of fun. We avoid it because we have found something infinitely better in Christ Jesus.
Where Halloween celebrates death, we celebrate eternal life. Where Halloween revels in fear, we rest in perfect love that “casteth out fear” (1 John 4:18). Where Halloween glorifies darkness, we walk in the light of the world. Where Halloween seeks thrills in the supernatural, we know the true supernatural power of the Holy Spirit dwelling within us.
Our True Identity
The fundamental issue is not whether Halloween is “really that bad,” but whether it aligns with who we are in Christ. We are “the temple of the living God” (2 Corinthians 6:16), “ambassadors for Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:20), and “more than conquerors through him that loved us” (Romans 8:37). Should such people masquerade as witches, devils, or creatures of the night? Of course, that is for you to decide.
Paul’s exhortation remains relevant: “Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light” (Romans 13:12). This is not legalistic restriction but joyful expression and celebration of our new nature in Christ.
The Heart of the Matter
Ultimately, our stance on Halloween flows from a deeper conviction about the nature of the Christian life. We believe that every aspect of our lives—including our celebrations, entertainments, and traditions—should bring glory to God and reflect our identity as His children.
This does not mean we live joyless lives devoid of celebration and fun. Quite the contrary—we have more reason for joy than any people on earth! But our joy is found in Christ, our celebration centers on Him, and our traditions reflect His character rather than the darkness of this world.
As the psalmist said: “Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing” (Psalm 100:2). This gladness and singing need not be forced into the mold of worldly celebration. The joy of the Lord is itself our strength (Nehemiah 8:10), and we need no artificial excitement or manufactured thrills when we walk with the One who is the source of all true joy.

To our friends who may see things differently, we offer this article not as indictment but to provide our perspective. We recognize that godly people can examine the same evidence and reach different conclusions about matters of Christian liberty. Our purpose is not to create division but to explain clearly why we have chosen this direction.

The world will not always understand our choices, and we may sometimes feel as though we are depriving ourselves or our children of innocent pleasures. But remember that we have not been called to follow the crowd but to follow Christ.
“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him” (Colossians 3:17). This simple test—can we do this in the name of Jesus?—will guide us safely through many difficult decisions.
The path of separation is not always easy, but it is always right. And in choosing the narrow way, we discover that His “commandments are not grievous” (1 John 5:3) and His “yoke is easy” and His “burden is light” (Matthew 11:30). What the world counts as restriction, we know as the pathway to true freedom in Christ.
May the Lord grant us wisdom to walk worthy of our calling, and grace to do so with love toward all, even those who see things differently than we do. For in the end, it is not only our separation that will draw men to Christ, but our love—love that flows from hearts transformed by the Lord’s amazing grace.**
