Pagan Fatalism & Human Philosophy
Of all the philosophical contagions that have attached themselves to the pure word of God, few are as pernicious or as insulting to the finished work of our Lord Jesus Christ as the doctrine of “Limited Atonement.” It is a doctrine that, under the guise of intellectual rigor and a defense of God’s “sovereignty“, shrinks the magnificent, world-embracing love of God into a cold, calculated transaction for a select few. It is an argument forged not in the fire of God’s revelation, but in the dim light of pagan fatalism and human philosophy.
The Doctrine and its Dubious Origins
Limited Atonement, sometimes cloaked in the more palatable terms “Particular Redemption” or “Definite Atonement,” is the chilling assertion that Christ’s death was never intended to save all of humanity. Instead, it posits that His atoning blood was shed exclusively for a predetermined group known as “the elect“. The proponents of this view argue from a basis of flawed human logic, suggesting that if Christ died for all, yet not all are saved, then His sacrifice must have been somehow ineffective or God’s will was thwarted.
This line of reasoning finds its classic expression in the trilemma of John Owen, a leading Puritan theologian, who argued that Christ’s death was for either: all the sins of all men, all the sins of some men, or some of the sins of all men. Concluding that only the second option was biblically tenable, he cemented a cornerstone of the Calvinistic system. Yet, such logic proceeds not from the clear testimony of scripture, but from a false premise.
The historical roots of this error run deep, not into the soil of apostolic teaching, but into the polluted ground of Greek philosophy. This fatalistic worldview was absorbed into a corrupted form of Christianity through Alexandrian scribes like Origen and later systematized by Augustine, who was a direct influence on John Calvin. Calvin, in his attempt to reform the Roman Catholic Church, retained its philosophical underpinnings of predestination, only swapping an impersonal fate for a “sovereign” God who preordains salvation and damnation. This doctrine flows logically from the other tenets of Calvinism—if man is so “totally depraved” that he cannot choose God, and if God has “unconditionally elected” only some to be saved, then it follows that Christ would only die for that pre-selected group. But a conclusion derived from a faulty foundation is itself faulty.
The Overwhelming Testimony of Scripture
When we turn from the labyrinth of human philosophy to the plain speech of the Holy Bible, the doctrine of Limited Atonement dissolves like a mist in the morning sun. The word of God, in its majestic simplicity, declares a universal offer of salvation paid for by a universally sufficient sacrifice.
A Lamb for the World: John the Baptist, upon seeing Jesus, did not declare, “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the elect.” He proclaimed, “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). To restrict “the world” to mean “the world of the elect” is a violent twisting of the text to fit a preconceived system.
A Love for the World: The most cherished verse in all of Scripture makes the scope of God’s love unmistakably clear: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). The word “whosoever” is a battering ram against the walls of exclusion; it means all, without exception. God did not send His Son to condemn the world, “but that the world through him might be saved” (John 3:17).
A Death for a Rejecting Nation and Beyond: In a moment of profound irony, God used the unbelieving high priest, Caiaphas, to declare the scope of Christ’s death. Driven by political expediency, Caiaphas prophesied “that Jesus should die for that nation; And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad” (John 11:51–52). Here, the Holy Spirit confirms through an enemy of Christ that the atonement extends beyond the borders of Israel—a nation that largely rejected Him (John 1:11)—to a scattered, global family, utterly demolishing any notion of an exclusive, limited provision. He literally died for the nation that rejected Him, according to God’s word. Here we have the elect nation (Romans 11:28), for whom Christ Died (John 11:51-52), and yet they rejected the Lord (John 1:11-12).
A Propitiation for the Whole World: The Apostle John, writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, leaves no room for doubt. He states that Jesus “is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world” (1 John 2:2). John explicitly distinguishes between the salvation applied to believers (“our sins“) and the boundless scope of Christ’s atoning work (“the whole world“). This passage stands in direct contradiction to the philosophical precepts of Limited Atonement.
A Death for All: The Apostle Paul echoes this truth, stating that “one died for all, then were all dead: And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again” (2 Corinthians 5:14-15). Christ gave Himself “a ransom for all” (1 Timothy 2:6), and by God’s grace, He did “taste death for every man” (Hebrews 2:9).
The Bible consistently distinguishes between the provision of salvation, which is unlimited, and its application, which is limited only by man’s willingness to believe. Christ’s death provided a sufficient atonement for every sin of every person, but it becomes effective only for those who receive it by faith. The ransom has been paid, but the captive must accept the freedom offered. This is not a complex theological puzzle but the simple, repeated testimony of the New Testament. The path to eternal life is not paved with a multitude of human works, but is a straight line drawn by a single condition:

When the trembling Philippian jailer, shaken to his core by the power of God, cried out, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” the apostolic reply was not a diatribe of philosophical exclusion. It was the elegantly simple command: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31).
The apostle Paul, in his masterful defense of the gospel, removes all doubt about the role of human effort. He says, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8–9). Salvation is a gift, and a gift that must be received by choice.
The Gospel of John stands as a monumental witness to this principle. It promises that “whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). It gives the assurance, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life” (John 5:24). The right to become a child of God is given to as many as receive Him, “even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12).
From the frightened jailer to the penitent woman, from the sermons of the apostles to the very words of Christ, the message is unchanging. The hand that receives the free gift of God is the hand of faith, and nothing more.
The Perilous Implications of a Limited Gospel
To teach that Christ’s death was limited is to create grievous practical and spiritual problems. It cripples the evangelist, who can no longer honestly proclaim to every soul, “Christ died for you.” It sows seeds of doubt in the believer’s heart, replacing faith-based assurance with anxious introspection about whether one is truly among the elect.
Furthermore, it makes a mockery of God’s sincere command to “preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15). If Christ did not die for every creature, then the gospel is not a genuine offer but a deceptive charade for the majority of humanity. The Bible’s God is “not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9), while the god of Calvinism creates multitudes for the express purpose of damnation, a monstrous caricature of the Father revealed in Jesus Christ.
The scope of Christ’s redemptive work is perfectly parallel to the scope of Adam’s ruin. “For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous” (Romans 5:19). Just as Adam’s sin brought condemnation upon all men, so Christ’s righteousness made the free gift of life available to all men.
The heart of the Gospel is not that Christ died for some, but that He died for all, so that “whosoever believeth” might be saved. The limitation is not in the power of His blood, but in the hardness of the human heart that refuses to believe. Let us therefore reject this philosophical system that diminishes His sacrifice and embrace the glorious truth that the arms of our Saviour on the cross were stretched wide enough to embrace the entire world.
